Conventional & Non-conventional Energy: Challenges & Opportunities
India’s energy consumption is growing faster than that of world. As per the KPMG report, India has the fourth largest energy demand after the United States of America, China and Russia. According to the 12th five year plan estimates, India’s primary energy consumption will grow by 80 per cent to 1018 Mtoe in 2022. With the increase in energy demand, the energy import requirement will also increase by 77 per cent, from 212 Mtoe in 2012 to 375 Mtoe in 2022.
"There is a lot of excitement among investors about the ambitious target that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government of India have set to ensure 24x7 power for all households as also for the industry and the farmers. Investments are expected across diverse areas of the energy sector including in renewables as well as transmission and distribution segments. Overall, the power sector is set for an estimated investment of $250 billion within 4-5 years".
- Shri Piyush Goyal, Hon’ble Minister of State with Independent Charge for Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy
Budget 2015-16 announcements present the Government's focus in providing an impetus to generation of solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, biomass power. Ministry of New Renewable Energy has revised its target of renewable energy capacity to 1,75,000 MW till 2022. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is banking on renewables to fight climate change rather than committing to emission cuts like China. He has set ambitious clean-energy targets including raising solar capacity fivefold to 100000 MW,, 60,000 MW Wind, 10,000 MW Biomass and 5000 MW Small Hydro by 2022.
Meeting the energy demand for the industrial sector hold the key in accelerating the economic growth of India. Energy efficiency improvement across the sectors assumes critical importance in view of the ever increasing energy needs. Market-based approaches to unlock energy efficiency opportunities is estimated to be about Rs. 74,000 crores by 2014-15.
Considering the importance & need for energy efficiency. The 10th National Conference on Indian energy sector – Synergy with Energy will be organized in Ahmedabad on May 5-6, 2015 with the theme “Conventional & Non-conventional Energy: Challenges & Opportunities”.
